Botox Treatments

Botox is the Allergan brand name of a toxin produced with bacterium Clostridium botulism. There are also other brand names, such as Dysport and Xeomin.

Botox injections are probably best known for reducing skin wrinkles. Botox can also help treat crossed eyes, eyelid spasms, excessive sweating, penile issues and some bladder disorders.

Skinsense has the only certified Botox injector clincian in Vanuatu. You may be confident that Botox administered by Skinsense will be correctly injected and that the desired results will be achieved by you.

At Skinsense we administer original Allergan Botox serum and generic Korean Botox. Our patients find more effective and longer lasting than Dysport and Xeomin.

What is Botox

Botox is the brand name of botulism toxin, and its produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. C. botulinum is found in plants, soil, water, and animal intestines. This chemical blocks the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, causing muscle paralysis that lasts for several months. Botox treatments are suitable for both men and women of all ethnicities.

How Does Botox Work

Botox blocks signals from the nerves to the muscles. The injected muscle can't contract. That makes the wrinkles relax and soften. Botox is most often used on forehead lines, crow's feet (lines around the eye), and frown lines. The muscle paralysis effect is how a Botox shot reduces the crinkling and wrinkling that naturally happens when we make certain expressions (and simply, aging). In some cases Botox may even prevent further creasing.

Botox injections are also used to treat conditions that affect how the body functions. Examples include:

  • Cervical dystonia. Botox treats this painful condition, in which your neck muscles contract involuntarily causing your head to twist or turn into an uncomfortable position.
  • Lazy eye. The most common cause of lazy eye is an imbalance in the muscles responsible for positioning the eye.
  • Muscle contractures. Some neurological conditions, such as cerebral palsy, can cause your limbs to pull in toward your center. In some cases, these contracted muscles can be relaxed with Botox injections. Hyperhidrosis. In this condition, excessive sweating occurs even when the temperature isn't hot and you're not exerting yourself.
  • Chronic migraine. If you experience migraines more than 15 days a month, Botox injections may help reduce headache frequency.
  • Bladder dysfunction. Botox injections can also help reduce urinary incontinence caused by an overactive bladder.
  • Eye twitching. Botox injections may help relieve contracture or twitching of muscles around the eye.

How Is a Botox Procedure Done

Getting Botox takes only a few minutes and doesn't require anesthesia. Botox is injected with a fine needle into specific muscles with only minor discomfort.

It generally takes 7 to 14 days to take full effect, and it is best to avoid alcohol starting at least one week before the procedure. You should also stop taking aspirin and anti-inflammatory medications two weeks before treatment to reduce bruising.

How Long Does a Botox Injection Last

The effects from Botox will last three to six months. As muscle action gradually returns, the lines and wrinkles begin to reappear and need to be treated again. The lines and wrinkles often appear less severe with time because the muscles are shrinking. The Botox effect does not last as long on patients who smoke, who are heavy drinkers and those with wrinkles caused by sun damage. Most of our clients have found that the generic Korean Botox works faster and lasts longer than the more expensive Allergan Botox.

What Are the Side Effects of Botox

Temporary bruising is the most common side effect of Botox. Headaches, which end in 24 to 48 hours, can happen, but this is rare. A small percentage of patients may develop eyelid drooping. This usually ends within three weeks. Drooping usually happens when the Botox moves around, so don't rub the treated area for 12 hours after injection or lie down for three to four hours.

Is Botox Safe for Your Eyes

Botox also is used to treat eye muscle problems (strabismus) and uncontrolled eyelid twitching (blepharospasm), and it was developed and FDA-approved for these uses with eye safety in mind. Precautions are necessary to prevent possible Botox Cosmetic side effects such as droopy eyelids, double vision, blurred vision, decreased eyesight, eyelid swelling and dry eyes. If you have any of these issues after an injection, report them to your clinician.

Who Should Not Receive Botox

People who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have a neurological disease should not use Botox. Since Botox doesn't work for all wrinkles, you should consult with a doctor first.

How Much Botox is Used Per Treatment

There is no magic number of Botox units required per treatment or area. Every patient is different and the volume of Botox required will vary. As a rough guideline you could refer to the illustration above.

How Much does Botox Cost

At Skinsense Vanuatu the cost of Botox treatment is determined by the number of units injected and by whom the treatment is administered.

  • Botox injected by a Skinsense clinician costs from 600vt per unit
  • Botox injected by a Skinsense doctor costs 1,750vt per unit
Although all Skinsense injectors are properly trained, qualified and experienced in performing Botox injections some treatment areas are only able to be injected with Botox by one of our doctors.

Unless you are already familiar with Botox treatments your initial Botox treatment may be administered and include an examination by one of our doctors. Subsequent treatments will either be administered by that doctor or by a Skinsense clinician under instruction from the doctor.
